Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) is a distinctive deciduous native tree found throughout much of eastern North America and valued for its aromatic foliage, attractive form, and colorful seasonal display. Young trees produce unusual leaves that may be oval, mitten-shaped, or three-lobed, often all appearing on the same plant. The leaves turn shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn, making sassafras a good addition to natural landscapes and woodland gardens. Mature trees commonly reach 30 to 60 feet tall, although larger specimens can occasionally develop under favorable conditions. Small yellow-green flowers appear in spring before the leaves fully emerge and may be followed by dark blue fruits on red stalks on female trees.
