Pavonia lasiopetala, commonly known as rock rose or rose pavonia, is a hardy, drought-tolerant perennial shrub native to Texas and northeastern Mexico, thriving in prairies, open woodlands, and rocky hillsides. This member of the mallow family (Malvaceae) typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall and wide, forming a bushy mound of attractive, lobed, gray-green leaves that are softly hairy to the touch. From late spring through fall, it produces a profusion of bright pink to rose-colored hibiscus-like flowers with five overlapping petals and prominent yellow stamens, which open in the morning and often close by late afternoon or on cloudy days.
